Catnip - Nepeta cataria
Catnip is not just for cats-even though they would like to think it's only meant for them. It is also known as Catnep, Catswort, Nep, and Field balm.
Catnip is from the Lamiaceae (Mint ) Family.
Catnip has been used to move Qi/chi, relax nerves; in baths to relieve stress; calm children or babies while teething, have colic, are restless, used as a nervine, stomach or digestive issues, as a sedative, and more.
Function: Cool the Exterior, Remove Sweating and Dispel Wind Heat
Effects of Catnip: sedative, anodyne, anti-diarrhea, antispasmodic, aromatic, astringent, carminative, diaphoretic, digestive, emmenagogue, febrifuge, refrigerant, tonic, mucolytic, nervine, sedative, and stomach.
Preparation: Catnip can be taken as a tincture, prepared as a tea, eaten, used in cooking, or made into a sachet to place by pillow in order to assist in inducing sleep. However, your cats would prefer you to sew some in material or in a sock for a new toy to play with.
Other uses: Catnip has been used to repel rats and many insects.
