Hyssop – Hyssopus officinalis
Hyssop is from the Lamiaceae (Mint) Family.
Hyssop is used in many cold formulas for coughs, bronchitis, cold, flu onset, laryngitis, pharyngitis, sinusitis, eruptive fevers. It has also been used for intestinal parasites, gastroenteritis abdominal bloating with pain, appetite loss, indigestion, scant, delayed or absent periods with cramps,, urinary stones, skin rashes, headaches, wounds, inflammation, bruises, strains contusions, sprains, toothache.
Function: Promote Expectoration and Resolve Phlegm-Cold
Effects: Expectorant, mucolytic, sedative; vasodilator; circulatory stimulant; diaphoretic; emmenagogue; Qi, lung and spleen tonic, stomach, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, carminative, febrifuge, aromatic, astringent
Preparation: Tincture, infusion, essential oil.
Other Uses: Hyssop essential oils are used in some perfumes. It has been used around beds to deter bugs or spread of infections.
Edible Uses: Can use the fresh herb as a Sage seasoning substitute. The young leaves, flowers, and tips of the shoots are edible.
